Jurgen Klopp has revealed there was “huge interest” in Luke Chambers last summer but the Liverpool manager “didn’t even do it” before turning him down.
Chambers became the latest academy player to make his full debut for Liverpool’s first-team squad in Thursday night’s 5-1 defeat to Toulouse. After 13 years at the club so far, the left-back joined the club at the age of six and has risen through the ranks.
However, Chambers was expected to spend the season away from Anfield after completing a half-season loan at Kilmarnock with offers from Bayer Leverkusen, Swansea, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.
Pre-season injuries were believed to be the reason for the failed transfer, but Klopp explained his involvement following the win over Toulouse.
This Is Anfield’s David Lynch reported this before kick-off. “He had a very good year in Scotland last year,” Klopp told reporters.I thought, “I was really interested in summer, but I couldn’t close my eyes for a moment and then I couldn’t let go.”Instead, Chambers stayed on Merseyside and became a regular for the U21s, now training and playing alongside the seniors.
Andy Robertson is likely to miss the rest of the season after shoulder surgery and could be eligible for more games in the coming weeks.”I think our U21 team at the moment is a very strong team together,” Klopp said. “And this is important, they train with us.
“You can’t get that quality anywhere else, whether it’s a Wednesday session, a minus-1 session or a real minus-1 session in the long period between Premier League and Europa League games.”It is very important that the children feel this too.
