Jürgen Klopp knows he has a ‘natural’ solution to Liverpool problem amid $44m chance

This time last year, Cody Gakpo was shining as a future star in his homeland, grabbing the headlines on a regular basis for PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutchman was thriving in the Eredivisie to such an extent that he seemed to outgrow the competition in a very short space of time.

Gakpo, who made just 14 starts last season, scored nine goals and had 12 assists. This means he scores a goal every 53 minutes on average for the Netherlands.

He was then positioned on the left side of the team’s attack, with most of his shots coming from his ability to cut inside with his right foot before attempting to score.

Gakpo’s performances have caught the attention of Liverpool on Merseyside, with Jurgen Klopp looking to bolster his forward line with new signings.

The Reds subsequently paid $44 million for his signature, but he has since been used in interesting ways at Anfield. Gakpo’s performances on the left flank in Holland were enough to earn him $44 million after joining Liverpool earlier this year (January), but he has mainly played in the false nine and on the left flank since donning the famous red shirt for England side.

MidfielderHis versatility is one of his greatest assets and Klopp has praised his intelligence on several occasions in recent months. “He’s a super footballer and a smart guy,” he said (via The Mirror).

“I had no idea he was 24 years old. He eats soccer balls. All the information we give him seems so natural that he takes it on the spot. He’s a real team player.”Gakpo performed at a reasonable level but was benched this season.

Darwin Nunes has established himself as Liverpool’s number 9, with Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenburch, Dominic Szoboslai, Alexis McAllister and possibly Harvey Elliott ahead of him in midfield.

He has yet to secure a permanent spot in the team, but a recent injury to a teammate could change that. aDiogo Jota had to be substituted after 54 minutes of Saturday afternoon’s against  Manchester City due to a setback at the Etihad Stadium.

It remains to be seen how long the Portuguese forward will be sidelined, but his loss will leave Klopp disappointed ahead of the winter schedule.

Jota started the match against Pep Guardiola’s men on the left side of Liverpool’s front three. He effectively occupied the favored position of Gakpo, whose presence was one of the main reasons why he could not play in a position that would allow him to flourish as a PSV representative.

Along with Luis Diaz, who likes to play on the left wing, Jota is also a real attacking option for Klopp.

The two players will compete for the starting role on the left side of the pitch, with Gakpo having to play elsewhere to break into the team. Now he can spend more time in his favorite position.
