Joel Matip’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season.
Jurgen Klopp is confident Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group will show their “class” and offer Joel Matip a new Liverpool contract.
Matip could miss the rest of the 2023/2024 season with a torn ACL. It is a big blow for the defender, who has been a key player under Klopp.
Matip arrived as a free agent from Schalke in the summer of 2016 and helped Reds win six major trophies, including the Champions League and the Premier League.
The 32-year-old striker is out of contract at the end of the season. However, Klopp believes FSG Matip will be offered a new contract.
The Liverpool manager had this to say ahead of Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace: “I’m confident the club will show their level. I’m sure the club has already told Joel what happened. It’s okay if he gets hurt.
Now we have to decide with Joel and what will happen after that.”He deserves all the support and he will get it. “I’d like to say yes, but I can’t sign the papers because it’s not my decision.”
