Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has learned a thing or two about challenging Manchester City during his time at Anfield. No other English club has enjoyed anything like as much success in the era of Pep Guardiola being at the Etihad.

The trophy count shows as much, with Liverpool managing to win every major piece of silverware despite the overall dominance Manchester City has had over the game. More than that, however, Klopp has had almost sole responsibility for at least keeping Guardiola honest, thrice breaking the 90-point barrier — twice to no avail.

In eight-and-a-half years, then, he has become pretty qualified on how to challenge Manchester City for titles. He has been speaking about it in the lead-up to the Arsenal match.

It’s being billed as a crucial game in the title race, and rightly so. But there is a sense that the winner of this match could determine who goes on and takes the fight to Manchester City, rather than necessarily who wins the league.

Of course, Liverpool goes into the fixture against Arsenal in much better shape. It boasts the better form, it has a five-point advantage at the top of the Premier League, and it has the comfort of knowing that a defeat would not be completely catastrophic.

But Klopp is in no doubt about what needs to happen. In order to stand a chance against the Manchester City behemoth, Liverpool knows the simple truth. It just needs to keep on winning.

“What what we learned over the years is that, if you want to be around City, you better win all your football games — because they do,” said Klopp in his press conference. “That’s all, this is the league, this is the time, City is dominating, that’s how it is. They play incredible stuff and would probably consider themselves not playing their very best season.”

A simple formula to say, but less so to execute. Liverpool has seen agonizing evidence that even near-perfection sometimes isn’t enough when it comes to a run-in against Manchester City. But for now, Klopp holds the cards, knowing that if his side can just keep winning then it will claim a 20th league title.

Liverpool.com says: The three teams in the league that can go vaguely toe-to-toe this season are Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. If Klopp can get through both meetings with the Gunners with an advantage over Guardiola’s side still intact, and with those two still to face off again, it would be massive.

But the games against the remaining 17 sides are rarely straightforward. Klopp has long since learned that there is no shortcut: a title against Manchester City simply calls for relentless winning, especially post-January.

There are some big decisions facing Klopp as he looks to engineer victory against Arsenal. Chief among his dilemmas is whether to play Conor Bradley or Trent Alexander-Arnold, while he has something of a conundrum in the other full-back position too, with Joe Gomez hard to drop. Hopefully Darwin Núñez is fit after a slight scare, having been pictured in training.
