Brighton threatened to continue their impressive recent run against Liverpool on Sunday, taking the lead at Anfield through Danny Welbeck. Klopp’s side battled back, though, to help the former Borussia Dortmund boss claim a first victory over De Zerbi since the Italian moved to the Amex Stadium.

Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah turned the game on its head to send Liverpool top, and they stayed there when Arsenal drew at Manchester City. After his own team’s game, Klopp was asked about the challenge posed by the Seagulls, and his response may offer encouragement to Liverpool fans keen on Brighton’s manager moving to Merseyside.

“The way they play [makes them a difficult opponent].” Klopp said on Sky Sports. “Possession-based team makes sense for them, they struggle defensively from time to time but when you have the ball like they have, the formation like they have, if they lose the ball there are opportunities for us.

“We had not enough possession against them in the other games – that is actually the best way to deal with them – so that is something we told the boys, it would be cool if we could have the ball more than them. Defending them is a bit like defending City – really calm on the ball. I like preparing for these games.”

Brighton finished sixth under De Zerbi last season, helping them qualify for Europe for the first time. Injuries have taken their toll this term but they’re still in the top half with nine games to go.

“We are not disappointed; we are sad for the result but really pleased with the performance,” De Zerbi said after his team’s defeat. “We played against a great team and played a good game.

“We conceded maybe too many shots. We changed and didn’t mark to man to man and conceded more ball possession, but we had chances to score in the first half and then in the last 15 minutes with [Adam] Lallana, [Danny] Welbeck and [Lewis] Dunk.

“We have to be proud because we played without seven injured players so to compete how we did was very good. I didn’t think we could have done any more.”
