Jurgen Klopp set for meeting with rival who labelled Liverpool boss ‘selfish’

Ahead of the Reds’ trip to Bramall Lane, Sheffield United announced that they had sacked manager Paul Heckingbottom, having picked up five points from 14 games. Owner Prince Abdullah initially confirmed the decision in a talkSPORT interview on Tuesday morning, following the club’s 5-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Burnley at the weekend.

Shortly after announcing Heckingbottom’s departure, Chris Wilder was named as his successor, rejoining the club he left in March 2021. Wilder led the Blades to two promotions in three seasons, culminating in a ninth place finish in the Premier League, before a dismal 2020/21 campaign brought his reign to an end.

During his first stint in charge, Wilder and Klopp clashed over several topics, leading the Sheffield United boss to label his Liverpool counterpart “selfish”. The pair will meet in the dugout, once again, on Wednesday night.

Back in the 2020/21 season, Wilder took issue with the idea of managers, such as Klopp, being in favour keeping the five substitution rule in place: “I’ve got incredible respect for these top managers because they produce top results and win things. But they’re selfish, they look after their own clubs. They’re not going to be bothered about Sheffield United, they’re not going to be bothered about England.”

A week later, Klopp would respond to Wilder’s comments: “Chris Wilder or whoever, constantly say I’m selfish. I think all the things show that he’s selfish but that’s not too important.”

Later in the season, Wilder continued to point fingers at Klopp. Following 2,000 Liverpool fans being allowed to watch the Reds as covid-19 restrictions eased, the Sheffield United boss claimed that Klopp was a top politician, as well as a head coach.

“He (Klopp) is a world-class manager and a world-class politician, who cares about Liverpool,” Wilder said. “He was never going to say what about Sheffield United getting their fans back in or Newcastle or Manchester City or Manchester United or anybody else.”
