Jurgen Klopp suggests Trent Alexander-Arnold could start in midfield against Brentford

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Trent Alexander-Arnold could start in midfield against Brentford this Sunday given Liverpool’s long list of absentees.

Alexis Mac Allister will miss the visit of the Bees to Anfield at the weekend after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the Premier League campaign against Luton Town. As a result, the Argentine has been handed a one-game domestic ban.

Liverpool also have several other fitness concerns in midfield heading into the final game before the November international break.

Thiago, Stefan Bajcetic and Curtis Jones will all miss Sunday’s affair, the latter expected to return after the international period.

Ryan Gravenberch, who missed the trip to Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday, is also doubtful for the weekend after picking up a minor knee injury. Klopp suggested that the Dutchman has a chance of being ready for Brentford, but will definitely return after the international break.

As a result of his dwindling options, Klopp has suggested that Alexander-Arnold could move from right-back to midfield against Thomas Frank’s side.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the German stated: “Yeah, a possibility [to play in midfield], it depends on the situation, the opponent, on a lot of things. We know that he can play there.

“For us, if we just put him there then we lose one of the best right-backs in the world, so we should not forget that completely at least. Of course he is an option for that position.”

Alexander-Arnold is now adept at stepping into midfield as an inverted right-back, offering Liverpool an overload in central areas and unlocking defences with his exquisite range of passes.

However, as has been seen with the England national team and on occasion in pre-season with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold is capable of playing as an out-and-out central midfielder.

With only Harvey Elliott, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo as senior midfield options at his disposal, Klopp could turn to the defender against Brentford.

Alexander-Arnold came on at half-time during Liverpool’s dismal 3-2 defeat in Toulouse, but was unable to spark a comeback. The 25-year-old and his Liverpool teammates will need to produce a better performance to get back on track this weekend.
