The Los Angeles Lakers will be without a key piece in the middle of their lineup, officially ruling out Deandre Ayton for Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. Ayton, who had been listed as questionable with a back injury, was downgraded to out as Los Angeles continues to deal with a growing list of injuries late in the regular season.
Ayton’s Absence Adds to Lakers’ Injury Concerns
Ayton joins Rui Hachimura and Marcus Smart, who are out for a second consecutive game, on the injury report, leaving the Lakers without three key rotation players.
Hachimura remains sidelined with right calf soreness, while Smart continues to recover from a right ankle contusion and hip tightness. The trio’s absence further tests the Lakers’ depth as they look to close out their road trip on a positive note.
Ayton Had Been Producing in Expanded Role
Before being ruled out, Ayton had been a steady contributor in recent games. He recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds in Monday’s 113-110 loss to the Detroit Pistons, marking his 21st double-double of the season.
Since the All-Star break, Ayton has averaged 10.1 points and 7.9 rebounds over a 17-game stretch, adapting to a role focused more on rebounding, rim protection and energy rather than scoring. That adjustment came after a period of self-reflection, as Ayton acknowledged shifting his mindset to better fit the team’s needs. “I just started looking in the mirror and said, ‘You’re not that guy,’” Ayton recently told The Athletic. “We need you to be the effort guy… run the floor, rebound and make bigs work.”
Lakers Lean on Doncic, Reaves With Frontcourt Thin
With Ayton unavailable, the Lakers will need to rely more heavily on their perimeter creators, including Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Dončić led Los Angeles with 32 points in the loss to Detroit, while Reaves added 24 as the team attempted a late comeback.
However, Ayton’s absence removes a key interior presence, particularly on the glass and defensive end. Without him, the Lakers could struggle to match up against Indiana’s frontcourt, especially with the Pacers coming off a momentum-building win.
Pacers Enter With Momentum
The Pacers snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 128-126 victory over the Orlando Magic, led by a 37-point performance from Pascal Siakam. That result gives Indiana confidence heading into Wednesday’s matchup, even as they remain out of postseason contention.
For the Lakers, maintaining rhythm and depth will be key as they attempt to secure their position in the Western Conference standings.
What Ayton’s Absence Means Moving Forward
Ayton’s absence underscores the broader challenge facing Los Angeles, which is navigating multiple injuries at a critical point in the season. While his offensive role has been reduced compared to earlier stages of his career, his impact as a rebounder and interior defender remains significant. If the injury lingers, the Lakers may need to continue adjusting their rotation and rely on smaller lineups or reserve bigs to fill the gap.
With playoff positioning still at stake, availability could ultimately determine how far Los Angeles can push down the stretch.
