The Reds moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to their hard-earned triumph over the relegation-threatened blades at Anfield. Mac Allister scored the pick of Liverpool’s three goals as he arrowed a right-footed half-volley into the top corner to restore their lead against the Blades.

A Conor Bradley own-goal brought the game level after Ivo Grbic saw his clearance cannon off Darwin Nunez into the back of the net. The Argentine netted his sixth goal in a Liverpool shirt, adding to his wonderstrike against Fulham, before Gakpo rubber-stamped the win in stoppage time.

Mac Allister addressed claims that his volley against the Cottagers had a stroke of luck about it, insisting he had to prove them wrong.

“I don’t know (which goal was better),” said the 24-year-old. “We were discussing that. Both of them were very good but the most important thing is that it helped to win the game. Against Fulham they told me it was lucky so I had to prove them wrong.

“I don’t know if it’s revenge (against Manchester United), but for sure it will be an important game for us because if we want to win something then we have to win every game and that is the aim,” he added.

This Sunday, Liverpool lock horns with fierce rivals the Red Devils as they look to avenge their dramatic FA Cup quarter-final defeat in March. In light of the disappointment, Gakpo was among the players criticised for their showing at Old Trafford but on Thursday against the Blades found the target to add gloss to the triumph.

Mac Allister addressed the critics, he said: “Let me just say something. I am really happy for this guy. He has been working very hard and today he got his goal. I am very glad because he is one of these guys who works hard, is always positive and a good leader for the group. I am very happy for him and happy for the group.”
