City were awarded a penalty against Everton in the 64th minute after Nathan Ake’s shot was blocked by Amadou Onana.

Ake’s powerful effort in the Onana goal left the Belgian midfielder with little time or space to adjust his hands, but referee John Brooks pointed to the spot.

The VAR decided not to overturn the decision as it was not a clear and obvious error. Julian Alvarez converted a penalty to give his side a 2-1 lead before Bernardo Silva added a third to give the visitors three points.

Liverpool fans couldn’t help but point out how City were awarded a penalty for the incident, but Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was not awarded a penalty for a far more obvious attempt to tackle the ball with his hands.

Many fans have taken to social media to express their displeasure at the continued absence of Premier League officials.

ECHO columnist John Aldridge shared a similar view, writing on Boxing Day that such a call could cost Liverpool the title at the end of the season.
