A bright return from injury has seen Diogo Jota quickly in-form for Liverpool, and he could be Jurgen Klopp’s own Sergio Aguero in the Premier League title race.

In every major competition win, there is a hero who delivers at just the right time. Liverpool’s Champions League victory saw Divock Origi produce the two biggest moments of the tournament, but the Reds could have a new hero should they win the league title this year.

Manchester City looked to Sergio Agüero as a player who could also deliver when needed, and there’s a Liverpool player following in the footsteps of the former Argentina international who scored 184 times in the Premier League. Diogo Jota has shown no signs of faltering form despite returning from injury, having contributed to six goals in his last eight appearances for the club.

That is a level of goalscoring that could be vital by May. The Portugal international has already demonstrated signs of progression this season. His goal against Toulouse in the Europa League showed the levels of a world-class striker who can challenge defensive lines directly, but his improvement has been more apparent since Christmas.

A precise finish during a six-minute cameo at Turf Moor against Burnley helped get Liverpool over the line amid some questionable refereeing decisions, before he showed excellent composure when rounding Martin Dúbravka before Mohamed Salah scored from the spot against Newcastle.

His form has even seen Klopp preferring him in the central role on the forward line ahead of Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez. For his lethal ability to score on both feet, as well as being noticeably strong at heading the ball despite his height, Jota is the best finisher in Liverpool’s squad.

FBref reveals how he is outperforming his expected goals (xG) by almost double across Premier League and Europa League games this season, having scored eight goals from 4.6 xG. He is the only forward scoring more than expected, with Salah the next closest with 14 goals from 14.3 xG. Agüero scored a league goal every 108 minutes for Manchester City and this season, Jota can match that if you include the Europa League as well.

Once a player that caused divide over whether Liverpool should sign him or the former Watford winger Ismaïla Sarr, Jota is now on the brink of world-class level. Should he continue his current rate of directly contributing to goals, particularly in the Reds’ upcoming games without Salah, Liverpool will effectively have its own Agüero who can pop up with big moments to secure vital points.

That could be significant in securing the final edge necessary to win Klopp’s second Premier League trophy. As a unique option in a forward line that now looks to have completely evolved, he is unparalleled in what he can offer at his peak, with a penchant for scoring decisive goals.

And as Cristiano Ronaldo moves toward the end of his career for Portugal, Jota’s prospects of starting more regularly at international level will only increase after the upcoming European Championships — where he will be one major tournament breakout performance away from announcing himself to the continent, while being one of the players that Klopp knew would be a staple in his plans to create ‘Liverpool 2.0’.
