Liverpool and West Ham’s League Cup history

 

December’s Carabao Cup quarter-final will be Liverpool’s first League Cup match against West Ham United in 35 years.

The Reds progressed to the last 16 with a 2-1 win at AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday night and quickly found their next opponent. The Hammers travel to Anfield for a fixture on the week of December 18.

Liverpool faced West Ham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.They last met in the fourth round of the League Cup in November 1988 and Jurgen Klopp’s men will be looking to avoid a repeat of that night’s 4-1 defeat.

However, after losing the first leg 2–1 at Upton Park in October 1971, Liverpool had the better of the team’s previous seven League Cup matches.

The Reds won a second-round replay two years later before clashing in the 1981 final, requiring another replay to decide a winner.

Goals from Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen at Villa Park gave Liverpool the first of four successive wins in the tournament.

And Bob Paisley’s side beat West Ham in 1983, winning 2-1 at Anfield in the fifth round of that season.
