Liverpool are ahead of Newcastle in terms of defensive transfer targets

Liverpool are competing with Newcastle for defensive target Ousmane Diomant. However, the Magpies are unlikely to complete the deal this month. The 20-year-old Ivorian centre-back has become a target for the Reds in recent days and Anfield Watch understands his club will sell him to Sporting CP for an €80m release clause.

According to Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias (via Sport Witness ), Newcastle are also interested in the budding star and have not ruled out a move in January. The report claims the Magpies are “preparing to make an offer” and representatives from St James’ Park could travel to Portugal to discuss a deal.

However, Diomand’s high price could be a major obstacle as Sporting do not want to compromise on valuation. Financial fair play is a real concern for Newcastle. Other reports suggest the club are willing to approve the sale of key stars such as Bruno Guimaras in order to meet spending rules. This money may not be spent on Diomande.

Liverpool, who have enjoyed a comfortable life under FSG in recent years, have no such financial concerns and could approve a deal for Diomond without fear of repercussions. But with the 6ft 1in center set to play for Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, it will be difficult for any club to seal a deal in January.

Meanwhile, Sporting’s need for a star in the domestic title race in the second half of the season means a summer move is likely, with Liverpool most likely to seek a deal. Diomant, who Sporting signed last year for just 7.5 million euros, has a contract with Lisbon until 2027. Liverpool have been linked with team-mate Goncalo Inacio in recent months, while Manchester United are interested in Levi Colville, but Chelsea are keen to sell.
