Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness has spoken regarding Xabi Alonso’s future with the Bavarians to replace Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness has revealed the German giants are ‘working’ to appoint Liverpool target Xabi Alonso.
The Spaniard is in high demand this summer following an incredible season in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, who are on the brink of winning their first Bundesliga title. Alonso’s success so far this season has made him a sought-after choice for top clubs around Europe.
Current Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season, pushing the Bavarians into the mix to bring in the man who is set to end their 11-year dominance of the Bundesliga.
Bayern aren’t alone in the chase as Liverpool also remain keen to replace Jurgen Klopp, who announced he will resign at the end of the season, with their former midfielder. Speaking to German outlet Ran Sport, Hoeness pulled no punches on Bayern’s interest in Alonso and suggested another of his former clubs, Real Madrid, are also in the running.
“Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it,” he said. “He’s proven that he can be a coach for the big time. There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don’t have a job or who are on sabbatical. It’s not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things.”
Real’s apparent interest raises further questions over the future of Carlo Ancelotti despite the 64-year-old penning an extension to his contract until 2026 last December. Los Blancos are eight points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga and still remain in the Champions League – drawing Manchester City in the quarter-final.
Alonso is a former player of all three clubs mentioned and looks sure to be the centre of a tussle between at least Liverpool and Bayern, who are both actively searching for a new manager. Alonso is under contract at Leverkusen until 2026.
