Liverpool could be inadvertently targeting a January signing who could help Jim Ratcliffe’s performance at Manchester United.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has put a price on Liverpool goalkeeper Hefren Thuram, which could see the Reds unwittingly support the British billionaire’s takeover of Manchester United.
Thuram was a target for Liverpool in the summer transfer window and Jurgen Klopp could be interested in him again in January.
Klopp overhauled his midfield during the summer transfer window. Players such as Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis McAllister, Dominik Soboslay and Endo Wataru saw the German upgrade from the previous campaign’s version.
The beautiful star was linked with a move to Anfield for Thuram but the move fell through. Instead, the 22-year-old stayed in Ligue 1 and impressed.
Thuram has made 10 appearances for Nice this season, but injuries have prevented him from playing a major role in Francesco Parioli’s side. This has led to reports that the France international could join in the January transfer window.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Nice boss Ratcliffe want £34.8m (€40m) for Thuram’s transfer fee. Juventus and Inter Milan are reportedly competing with Liverpool for his signature.
But if Liverpool are willing to sign Thuram for that price, they could be inadvertently helping their north-west Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Ratcliffe is close to completing the purchase of a 25% stake in the Old Trafford team for £1.4 billion.
If Liverpool pay £34.8m for Nice, Ratcliffe could help fund the French club as they look to revamp United’s sporting department. That could help the 71-year-old INEOS boss focus more on his work at United.
