It’s been another productive week for Liverpool as the 2023/24 season begins.
After beating Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday, they went ahead with a 2-1 League Cup win against Bournemouth on Wednesday night. Darwin Nunez’s phenomenal goal in that game has certainly been in the Kopits discussion ever since. With Jurgen Klopp’s side set to compete again on all fronts, Liverpool’s refereeing team have given their thoughts on the current situation at Anfield.
Andrew Cullen: The football world doesn’t seem to trust Darwin Nunes. To some it is clumsy, clumsy and inefficient. Liverpool fans naturally went for Nunez.
Why? First, he contributed significantly and consistently in terms of assists and goals. It’s also fun to watch. It can go from cool to stupid very quickly. An example of this is his very intense performance against Toulouse, where he threw the ball to Suárez, the last defender, but Rosenthal missed his effort.
Nunez missed the opportunity, but was able to score. Elegant, yet sophisticated. Salah was known to miss opportunities early in his Liverpool career. Liverpool fans will have to be as patient with Nunes as they are with Salah.
It doesn’t matter if Nunez misses the chance. What matters is whether he makes a difference in the game. The best hitters do. We saw Nunes in action against Newcastle and Bournemouth during the week.
We may see more of Nunes’ mistakes and odd game, but he has all the ingredients to be one of the best strikers in Europe.”Klopp has the right balance to be patient in all aspects.”David Shams: It felt good to wake up the morning after we won 2-1 at Bournemouth.
After watching the highlights and reading the comments, I feel better. Players further down the depth chart see time and contribute when they can. I can’t say, but the season is long and difficult. Even players who don’t have consistent times can come in and do their thing, and some are critical to success.
Depth was an issue many of us noticed early in the season. I don’t think it would be a bad idea to sign another player in January, but it might not be necessary. Jarell Quanza was a revelation.
He is a solid centre-back who plays like a wily veteran with hundreds of appearances. People on popular podcasts are talking about him as Stefan Bajcetic this season. It could very well be.
