Liverpool’s search for a new manager could give the club an advantage in the transfer market.
Manchester United are preparing for a summer full of big changes, with Jurgen Klopp set to leave the club. The German specialist announced last week that he will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season.
Liverpool have been linked with potential suitors to replace Klopp this summer. So far, the Reds have played in all four competitions they started the season with, finishing in the top four.
Klopp will not be the only one leaving Anfield in the coming months. Sporting director Jörg Schmatke, along with three members of his coaching staff – Pep Lijnders, Peter Kravitz and Vitor Matos – will also have to be replaced at the end of the January transfer window. When news broke that Klopp would be leaving Anfield this summer, rumors immediately began linking Xabi Alonso with the upcoming vacancy.
The former Liverpool midfielder is the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, with the club currently top of the Bundesliga and two points ahead of Bayern Munich. One of Leverkusen’s most important players this season is Florian Wirtz.
The 20-year-old has scored 8 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions and is set to join Liverpool. It was reported last summer that the Reds were interested in signing Wirtz, but not until the end of the season. The rumors have not died down, with Pichayes saying he wants Wirtz to be Alonso’s first signing if he is appointed Liverpool manager.
Wirtz’s form has shown that Liverpool are interested in a player who can operate in the attacking midfield. The report claims that Leverkusen would need a €70m bid to allow their star player to leave the club.Of course, who will replace Klopp as Liverpool manager remains a mystery. Alonso is an early favorite with the bookies, but there are no clear reports to suggest he is unlikely to occupy that position in the Anfield dugout.
If Alonso gets the job and Wirtz claims to be a player of interest to Liverpool, this could be advantageous for the Reds. But for that to happen, Alonso would have to be named head coach of Fenway Sports Group for the first time in a decade.
