Liverpool face Newcastle in the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp faces a string of qualifiers.
Liverpool continued their good form in the Premier League by beating Burnley on Boxing Day.
Diogo Jota marked his return to action after replacing Darwin Nunes in Red’s 2-0 win at Turf Moor.
Liverpool will now face Newcastle United in the Premier League on New Year’s Day. Here’s a look at the changes Jurgen Klopp’s side could make as they take the next step.
Klopp brought in more substitutes than expected against Burnley, but now that the busy December schedule is over, the players will be able to rest after two days off.
This means the Reds manager can put together as strong a squad as possible for the trip to Newcastle. Alisson Becker is expected to be on target as Caoimhin Kelleher prepares for the League Cup and FA Cup in early January.
Injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas meant the versatile Joe Gomez temporarily took over at left-back, with Luke Chambers deputizing. Trent Alexander-Arnold is first choice on the right flank, with Conor Bradley deputizing for him.
Ibrahima Konate has been rested at Burnley but will be favorite to start alongside skipper, Jarel Quansah, replacing the impressive at centre-back.
Mac Allister Need a boost?
The potential return of Alexis McAllister could give Liverpool more options in the engine room, with the Argentine able to play as a number six or on the left of the back three.
Wataru Endo, who has been active as a defensive midfielder recently, is likely to make his final appearance in the Asian Cup against Japan.
Ryan Gravenbirch started against Burnley but was replaced by Curtis Jones, who will make a strong push for a starting place. Dominik Szoboszlai replaced Harvey Elliott on the right side of midfield at third and the pair once again competed for the role.
Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Vaisetic are yet to feature, while youngsters James McConnell and Bobby Clarke have secured Premier League spots in recent weeks.
Diaz’s decision
Jota’s return is particularly timely with Mohamed Salah leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations after Monday’s game. Although the Portuguese may not be ready to start after a month.
Cody Gakpo impressed on the left against Burnley, while Nunes did the same in the centre, with both fighting for a starting spot in either position.
Salah has played regularly at right-back this season, with Elliott and Cade Gordon coming in as alternatives alongside Ben Doak.
