Liverpool fans are convinced that 40-year-old Fernando Torres could do a better job up front than Jurgen Klopp’s current £37million forward option.
Liverpool fans are convinced that Fernando Torres should replace struggling Cody Gakpo at Anfield.
Torres, 40, played for a Liverpool Legends team against Ajax under former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson as he fulfilled a lifelong dream of managing a Liverpool side at Anfield after he announced in January he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and might have less than a year to live.
Despite the first-half not going to plan for the Swede with his Liverpool side 2-0 down at half-time after goals from Derk Boerrigter and Kiki Musampa, Torres’ display has nonetheless had Reds fans drooling over him 13 years after he broke their hearts to join Chelsea in a £50million move.
Liverpool fans lapped up El Nino’s performance on social media, as some suggested the club should bring him back permanently to replace the lacklustre Gakpo in the squad. One comment on Twitter said: “Fernando Torres counting back the years there,” a second wrote: “Fernando Torres And Steven Gerrard Are Still World Class. They Are Both Better Than Gakpo”.
A third lauded: “Seeing Fernando Torres ball again is beautiful,” with a fourth dreaming: “Oh damn I missed Fernando Torres. Wish he was still our striker and never got old.” While a fifth claimed: “I’d rather 40 years old Fernando Torres over Cody Gakpo.”
Torres joined Liverpool in 2007 in a club record-breaking £26.5million move from Atletico Madrid, he went on to score 81 goals in 142 games in all competitions for the Reds across three-and-a-half years at the club, where he was named as Liverpool’s Player of the Season in 2008 and in the Premier League PFA Team of the Year in 2008 and 2009.
However, the Spaniard broke the hearts of Reds as he swapped Anfield for Stamford Bridge on January Deadline Day in 2011, sealing a £50m switch to Chelsea after previously handing in a transfer request, but all seems to be forgiven now.
Torres went on to flop at Chelsea, scoring just 45 times in 172 games, but his infamous Champions League semi-final goal against Barcelona lives long in the memory of Blues fans. The 110-time Spain international retired in 2019 at Japanese side Sagan Tosu after stints at AC Milan and back at Atleti after leaving West London.
The former Kop favourite marked his return by scoring Liverpool’s fourth goal of the game as he turned in Mark Gonzalez’s cross to put the Reds 4-2 up and put the cherry on top of their incredible second-half turnaround.
