Luis Suarez was found guilty of fraud in a test to secure the transfer.
The Uruguayan represented seven clubs in his illustrious career, reaching absolute peaks with Liverpool and Barcelona.
After scoring 82 goals for Liverpool, he scored 198 goals in 238 appearances for Barcelona. With his contract set to expire in 2020, Suarez looked set to move to Serie A side Juventus and passed his Italian citizenship test before moving to the Old Lady.
His wife, Sofia Balbi, is Italian, and Suárez studied at the University of Perugia. It would be very useful for Juventus as being an Italian citizen would classify him as an EU player.
However, a huge controversy arose when reports surfaced that there was “cheating” in the test, and a police investigation found this to be true.Suarez is said to have been warned in advance about some of the questions asked and CCTV footage of Suarez taking the test proved he had a helping hand. At one point, Suarez appeared to be handed a sheet of paper with the answers you might expect, and later some university officials asked him for a photo and an autograph.
The university’s president, Simone Olivieri, and three professors were suspended for eight months for the conduct.
They were found guilty of pre-fixing exam results and scores to comply with Juventus’ demands in an attempt to project a positive image for both themselves and the university.
“The deal fell through and Suarez eventually signed for Atletico Madrid, where he scored 34 goals in 83 games and added another La Liga title to his collection. He then returned home for a second spell at Penarol before signing for Brazilian giants Gremio, where he scored a 19th-minute hat-trick.
Suarez is expected to work alongside Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets in his next transfer.
