Liverpool forward scores first goal after 19-month injury lay-off and could be set for first team promotion

Kaide Gordon was on the scoresheet for Liverpool Under-21s as they won away at Newcastle United on Saturday.
Liverpool Under-21s clinched their third-successive win as goals from Trey Nyoni and Kaide Gordon saw them run out 2-1 winners away at Newcastle United on Saturday.

The young Reds took the lead after just three minutes as the in-form Jayden Danns won possession with a high press. Feeding Nyoni, the 16-year-old finished smartly as he opened the scoring with his first goal in Premier League 2.

Gordon would then double the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half after Danns was brought down in the box. The strike would be the winger’s first since returning from long-term injury in September following 19 months on the sidelines, with his last goal coming 25 months ago against Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup in January 2022.

Yet having made two appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s first team this season, and been included in a further five matchday squads, the senior Reds’ latest injury blows to Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez could potentially see Gordon handed another temporary promotion with Luton Town visiting Anfield on Wednesday night and the League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley looming next weekend.

Ben Parkinson pulled a goal back a minute later for the hosts, but Liverpool held on to claim all three points.

And while Danns was unable to get on the scoresheet himself, his latest assist leaves him with 21 goals and seven assists from 22 games at Academy level. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old has returned two goals and two assists from four PL2 appearances since stepping up to Barry Lewtas’ side at the turn of the year.

Elsewhere, Liverpool Under-18s fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Man City.

Luca Fletcher opened the scoring shortly before the break after a defensive error, before doubling City’s lead when running onto a long ball over the top.

The young Reds fought back and halved the deficit with 15 minutes remaining as Kareem Ahmed finished Kyle Kelly’s low cross. But they were unable to find an equaliser at the LFC Academy.
