Liverpool has seven options after Xabi Alonso twist as Jürgen Klopp handed Curtis Jones boost

The hunt continues for Liverpool’s next manager after Xabi Alonso ruled himself out of the running. Jürgen Klopp has delivered the latest injury news a

The international break has come and gone, and now Liverpool is back in action on Sunday against Brighton and Hove Albion. The Reds will play three games within eight days, which could prove to be pivotal in the 2023/24 title race.

Aside from games coming thick and fast, Jürgen Klopp is once again having to contend with injuries to key players within his first-team squad, after defender Andy Robertson hobbled off during Scotland’s 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland. The 30-year-old has since undergone scans on the ankle problem, which revealed he had avoided serious injury but will still likely be absent for the Brighton game.

However, it’s not all bad news on the injury front, with midfielder Curtis Jones expected to make his return to the matchday squad this weekend after being missing due to an ankle setback. Elsewhere, Trent Alexander-Arnold is also on the mend and could feature in next weekend’s clash against Manchester United. Diogo Jota is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a nasty-looking knee injury, but will miss out this weekend.

Liverpool gets Curtis Jones boost before Brighton

Liverpool returns to Premier League action on Sunday, with the Reds only behind Arsenal at the top of the table on goal difference. The Gunners will host third-place Manchester City on Sunday, shortly after Liverpool faces Brighton at Anfield.

Heading into the crucial clash, Liverpool has received a huge boost in terms of the fitness of England U21 international Curtis Jones. The midfielder has been out injured since the Brentford game but now looks set to make his return to the first-team picture. Jürgen Klopp spoke to the media ahead of the clash against the Seagulls, where he revealed Jones had been back in full training in the build-up to this weekend.

Liverpool will now have to consider other options to Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, after he confirmed he would be staying at the German club for the foreseeable future. Both Liverpool and Bayern Munich were heavily interested in the Spaniard taking over this summer.

 

Several alternative options have been linked since Jürgen Klopp announced he would be leaving Anfield back in January, which the club will now consider. The frontrunners currently include Sporting CP boss Rúben Amorim, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann.
