Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City, relive United’s first five wins under Jurgen Klopp.
The clubs have met 23 times since Klopp took charge in October 2015, with the German winning 10 of them. Klopp’s first meeting with City as Liverpool manager was one of the highlights and results of his first season in charge.
Just over a month after taking charge, Manchester United found themselves in an unbearable mood at the Etihad Stadium with a three-goal lead.
Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino set up an own goal by Eliaquim Mangala in the 32nd minute.
Sergio Aguero partially reduced the damage to the hosts before half-time, but Martin Skrtel’s late strike secured a memorable victory in Manchester.

However, in the 9th minute of the second half, the game changed as Manchester United took a 4-1 lead thanks to three goals from Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan then threatened Pep Guardiola’s side with a stunning comeback, but Klopp’s men went ahead after the final whistle of the thriller. April 2018 – Liverpool 3:0 Manchester City (Champions League)
Three months later, manchester produced another performance at Anfield and took a big step towards the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Once again, Salah, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mane scored. This time it was all in the first half. Klopp’s men scored three goals in the first leg. Defensive resilience prevented City from scoring at home and Liverpool secured an impressive 2-1 second leg win against Manchester.
November 2019 – Liverpool 3:1 Manchester City (Premier League)The scale of this encounter became clear at a relatively early stage in the 2019/20 season, as Manchester City were just one point adrift in last season’s title challenge.
Eight days later, after a remarkable comeback from a disappointing defeat at Villa Park, Klopp’s attack redoubled in their relentless march to the title.
Fabinho’s long-range strike in the 6th minute of the first half became the catalyst and soon Salah headed home with a stunning move and Mane made it 3 early in the second half. Silva later scored for City but it was Liverpool’s goal and eventually the crown.
April 2022 – Manchester City 2-3 Liverpool (Emirates FA Cup)On a spring afternoon at Wembley, Anfield South swayed to the music of cheering hooves. In another close battle for the Premier League title, the two teams met in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Ibrahima Konate’s header gave the Reds the lead just before the break, thanks to a doubt from Mane. But it was Liverpool’s success that saw Jack Grealish and Silva find the back of the City goal in added time, bringing the Reds one step closer to league glory that season.
