Liverpool are firmly behind Jurgen Klopp but know they will have to find a replacement at some point, given the dynamic German manager has worked tirelessly on Merseyside for the past eight years.
At the time of writing, Anfield are more interested in the option than Xabi Alonso. He was a fan favorite in the Coppa during his playing days and brought his composure and Midas touch to management.
His first major assignment at Bayer Leverkusen could not have gone better, with Alonso taking the Werkself from second place to the top of the Bundesliga in a year.
Xabi Alonso’s ball = Leverkusen play fast even if the ball is out.
I counted 29 balls lined up around the court. Some of them are shown below: I think so… there are quite a few!? pic.twitter.com/766aC8yVXa— Archie Rhind-Tatt (@archiert1) November 12, 2023
Wolves are already making a move, with Alonso now mentioned as a strong contender with Carlo Ancelotti out of contract at the end of the season.
Despite this, sporting director Simon Rolfes said Alonso was committed to his work and the former Real Sociedad star would not be rushed.
If Liverpool need a manager and Alonso is at Leverkusen, SDZ (via Football Espana) report that his release could cost between £13m and £16m.
Despite Rolfes’ comments, this clause is a clear sign that Leverkusen know how impressive Alonso is and how strong their interest in him is.
Either way, Liverpool are hoping that Alonso will arrive long-term, but that’s not the case just yet.
