Nunez has scored 22 goals and provided 10 assists in 60 appearance for liverpool since joining from Benfica in the summer of 2022.

While he showed promise and performed impressively, he was also criticized for being rude in front of goal. The Uruguay international missed a number of decent chances in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City and after the game Fowler wondered if he would be the “finished article” in the Mirror’s column.

He wrote: “Without wanting to be overly critical, I think it’s a viable question. How long do you allow your players to go from a rough and promising knight to a finished knight?

“I ask because that’s all I’ve heard since the Etihad game… If Jurgen Klopp expresses the raw side of Darwin Núñez in a finished article, Liverpool could overtake Manchester City.

For me it’s a matter of if, not when. – How much time will you give him? He arrived at Anfield around 18 months ago, but we’re still talking about his potential, his ‘exciting brutality’. But you can’t spend your whole career like that, can you?

Nunez arrived at Liverpool when Erling Haaland joined City and while Fowler agreed it was “unfair” to compare the two players, he picked out a moment from Saturday’s game which highlighted the difference in quality between the two players.

“Nunes arrived at Liverpool at the same time as Haaland came into the Premier League and I sympathize with Nunes because the City striker costs less and has a very similar level of experience, but there is a big difference.”

“We had two moments in the first half that showed the gap between the two. Haaland’s goal was classic striker instinct. It reminds me so much of me!“He made a very difficult scene look simple.

Nathan Ake was only 10 meters away and a big defender like Virgil van Dijk was in goal. But he thought the counter in space was the best attacker, always engineer, a touch and a shot. High quality finish.

“Nunez was in the same position when the defense pulled back and the same space opened up for him, but there was no attempt to open up a good shooting angle. Instead, he waited for something to happen to him.
