Liverpool continued their impressive start to the 2023/24 season ahead of their third international break of the year with a 3-0 win over Brentford at Anfield in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side moved into second place, just a point off top spot, after Tottenham Hotspur lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City drew 4-4 with Chelsea in a thrilling game at Stamford Bridge.
However, defeating Wasps was not easy as Liverpool’s bench appeared to lack senior leadership in positions on the pitch. Luis Diaz was the only player among Klopp’s substitutes aged over 20.
It is doubtful that the Reds would have kept Tyler Morton this summer as the midfielder in particular has looked very bright.
The talented midfielder joined Hull City on loan in September.Tyler Morton’s Liverpool Academy Stats
Morton, 21, is an important veteran of the development game despite making just nine appearances for Liverpool. He scored 13 goals and provided 16 assists in 75 appearances for various youth teams.
A defensive midfielder, he wants to get forward and influence play in the attacking phase. This may be due to the innately progressive philosophy his club has developed under Klopp.
Liverpool midfielder Tyler MortonLast season he was loaned out to Second Division side Blackburn Rovers, where he made 40 Championship appearances and provided four assists. Now he has been loaned out again.
Tyler Morton’s season by the numbersJoining the Tigers may have been Morton’s move, but there are arguments that Klopp could have used his talents on Merseyside.
Described by media outlet Matthew Stanger as a “fantastic talent”, Morton has made 10 league appearances this season and made eight consecutive starts after being used on the bench in the first two games. So far, impressive.
According to SofaScore, Morton completed 91% of his passes, recorded 2 assists, 1 key assist, 3.5 rebounds per game and had an amazing 83% dribbling success rate.
A hard-working center, Morton could fill that role this season in the absence of outgoing number six specialist Wataru Endo, which would be great considering he’s tied with Dominic Szoboslai for assists. Open up a new dimension. Be creative when necessary.
Hungarian dynamo Szoboszlai, who joined from RB Leipzig for £60m this summer, has flourished under Klopp. He brought vitality and energy back to the midfield and provided an action-oriented approach to get the club back into the Premier League.
The title comes after last year’s song.Talent scout Jacek Kulig called him “an artist” because of his creativity. Interestingly, the 22-year-old tied his season assist record. Perhaps it highlighted an underrated aspect of the Liverpool loanee’s game.
That said, it’s still clear who has the better game.
However, Morton’s inclusion is only part of his extensive midfield prowess and while he may not see regular action from the start, his fine presence may have served Klopp well in his struggle for success on several fronts.
