Liverpool ‘make decision’ on £51m-rated January transfer target

Liverpool are being linked with a number of potential new signings as the January transfer window approaches.

Although Liverpool were unable to build on their outstanding performance against Manchester United at Anfield last week, they are still in a very strong position as we approach the final week of the year.

In 2024, United are still in contention for the title and have a golden opportunity to secure a place in the Champions League if they fail to lift the ultimate trophy.

But will Jurgen Klopp and his team be in the market to strengthen their ranks in the new year? A host of midfielders left the club in the summer, leaving United scrambling to recruit suitable reinforcements.

Their prolific performers include Alexis Mac Allister, Dominic Szoboslai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenburch, but reports in the transfer window suggest Klopp is keen to sign a new number six even after Fabinho’s departure.

Several names were on the radar before January, including Fluminense’s Andre. However, there are defensive concerns, especially after Joel Matip’s ACL injury, and Liverpool may not have time to focus on additional midfielders next month.

Reds are being linked with Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, who continues to attract a lot of interest from across the Premier League and beyond. However, Football Insider report that Liverpool have now “made a decision” over the link and are “unlikely” to try to sign the defensive midfielder in the winter transfer window.

After a summer of spending, Palhinha is no longer considered the ‘boss’ of Manchester United. Manchester United continue to climb to the top of the Premier League.

Fulham have signed the Portugal international for £20m in 2022, taking his value to £51m already, according to Transfermarkt. Palhinha signed a new contract at Craven Cottage last September and his future is set to run until 2028, but reports suggest he could leave the club next year if he receives an offer.
