Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was the number one target for a significant amount of time before committing himself to Bayer Leverkusen, while Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has also now been ruled out of the running for the job.

That leaves Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim as the overwhelming favourite, while the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Simone Inzaghi have been mentioned.

With a number of international tournaments this summer, including Euro 2024 and the Copa America, Liverpool will want to make an appointment as soon as humanly possible, with early June potentially when the Reds will unveil their new boss according to Football Insider.

“I think more likely it will be post-season, just to be fair to Jurgen Klopp to see out the season,” said O’Rourke.

“Liverpool are fighting for the Premier League title and the Europa League, so they won’t want any distractions.

“And it’s the same for the potential targets. I’m sure Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon doesn’t want any distractions between now and the end of the season as well, he’s got his own targets to go for, trying to win the Portuguese title.

“So I think it wouldn’t be fair, especially on managers who are in jobs right now, to have any announcements of potentially moving into a new job. I think post-season is the most likely scenario for Liverpool to announce who is going to replace Klopp.

He added: “Talks are probably ongoing right now with a number of candidates, not just Amorim. There has been talk of Julian Nagelsmann, who is taking charge of Germany at Euro 2024, and I’m sure there are other candidates that are not out there in the press that Liverpool are talking to as well and seeing if there is a possibility of bringing them in.

“So I don’t expect any announcement before the end of the season, and I think we’ll probably get it in early June, ready ahead of pre-season.”
