Liverpool set to unleash own Kevin De Bruyne on title race and Gary Neville knows what he can do

Trent Alexander-Arnold is back from injury. He could be just what Liverpool needs to rescue the Premier League title race, and Gary Neville knows exactly why.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return couldn’t have come at a better time for Liverpool. If nothing else, he’ll be needed to replace Conor Bradley at right-back.

But as we all know, the Reds’ 66 is far more than a stopgap solution. In fact, he could very well be what Liverpool needs to drag itself back into title contention.

Alexander-Arnold’s return to the fold was perhaps earlier than Jürgen Klopp had hoped on Sunday. Having been out since February, he understandably didn’t look up to speed after coming off the bench against Crystal Palace, and unfortunately he was in a position where his side perhaps needed him more than ever.

The 1-0 defeat means Liverpool’s title hopes are now out of its hands. If the Reds are to bring Klopp another title before he leaves, then they’re going to have to rely on Manchester City and Arsenal slipping up before the end of the season, while also keeping a perfect record themselves.

With Alexander-Arnold back though, they are perhaps more capable of doing that. The academy graduate has proven time and time again to be a game-changer for Liverpool — City away and Fulham at home spring to mind this season.

And he was of course the catalyst for the Reds’ turnaround last season as a late charge for the Champions League was made despite what had been a hugely disappointing campaign. Gary Neville knows all about the effect Alexander-Arnold can have.

“I’d put you in the same category as Kevin De Bruyne and David Beckham in terms of use of the ball, I have never seen anything like it, I don’t know how you do it,” Neville said while speaking to Alexander-Arnold on the latest episode of The Overlap. “I have no idea how you deliver the ball, how you do from deep, from high up the pitch, from when you’re in midfield and the passes you play.”

Neville went on to heap further praise on Alexander-Arnold by comparing him to himself during his playing days. The 25-year-old has earned himself a reputation as something of a trailblazer.

“For me, as a right back, was I going to win my team the game? No, very rare,” Neville continued. “I could only lose my team the game, that was my mentality. I played 600 games for Manchester United, thinking that most weeks the likelihood is that I’m not going to win my team the game, no one is going to say that Gary Neville was the best player on the pitch if we win.

“I played my whole career like that, whereas you play your career with the freedom of thinking, ‘I’m going to influence this game in a positive way’, because of the way you play. Wayne Rooney was like that, I remember gameday, quarter-final in 2004, first tournament, I asked whether he was alright thinking he’d be a little nervous and he said, “I can’t wait for tonight.” I thought, ‘I’m glad someone can’t, I’m playing against Ronaldo and Figo’.”
