Liverpool shares impressive record with Chelsea and Man City and it shows true scale of progress

As the old adage goes, attack wins you games; defense wins you titles. If that is the case, Liverpool fans have great cause for optimism six games into this Women’s Super League (WSL) season. The Reds have conceded just four goals in the top flight this term — the joint fewest of any side in the division.

Of course, even the most sanguine of Liverpool supporters would admit that statistic is unlikely to lead to any tangible reward at the end of the current campaign. But, while it will likely take several more transfer windows before Matt Beard’s side are seriously vying for the WSL’s top honors, the Reds’ impressive defensive record is yet another indicator of the significant progress made at the club since the turn of the year.

The arrival of Japan international Fuka Nagano in the January transfer window gave Liverpool’s midfield the solidity it had been lacking since the club’s promotion from the Championship, while the return of center-back Gemma Bonner — who won the WSL with the Reds in 2023 and 2014 — helped shore up Beard’s defensive ranks.

Indeed, Bonner’s enduring excellent form has had a huge part to play in Liverpool’s top-flight revival this term. The 32-year-old set a new WSL-era appearance record for the club when she featured against Manchester City in the Continental League Cup last week and she continues to be a commanding presence in the Reds’ backline.

Her task has admittedly been made easier by Liverpool’s shrewd summer recruitment, with the acquisition of Scotland international Jenna Clark from Glasgow City already seeming like a masterstroke.

At 22, Clark is one of the most exciting young prospects in the division; her consistent brilliance at center-back having been central to much of the Reds’ success in the early weeks of the season. Coupled with the versatility of former England youth international Grace Fisk, who arrived on Merseyside from West Ham United in July, Liverpool’s defense is, as the statistics show, one of the strongest in the league.

And there is no better test for Beard’s new-look rearguard than a clash with reigning WSL champions and current league leaders Chelsea, who will host the Reds in West London on Saturday afternoon. For so long, Emma Hayes’ side has been the benchmark for top-flight excellence.
