The Reds overcame Thomas Frank’s men 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday to move to second in the Premier League table. While it was a productive afternoon for the Merseysiders, Matip was left feeling aggrieved after picking up a yellow card.
During the 37th minute of the game, the defender picked up his caution after bringing a Brentford break through Christian Norgaard to an end. On first viewing, it looked as though Matip had tripped the Brentford man but he actually took the ball cleanly. Jurgen Klopp hits out at TV companies over Liverpool’s rushed trip to Man City Supporters took to Twitter to air their disgust at the decision. One wrote: “Free-kick against Matip AND booked for this. Incredible.”
Another then said: “Joel Matip was RAGING over his yellow card, and it’s hard to blame him – it was a ridiculous decision,” whilst another Liverpool fan was left fuming. A further supporter said: “Officials are really awful aren’t they? How’s Matip been booked for that. Bizarre. It’s not even a foul.” While some were left aghast at the decision for Matip to go into the book, others were amused by the defender’s reaction. One fan said: “Matip is the funniest player ever man. Cracks me up every time.”
“Matip’s reactions are hilarious,” another wrote, while a further supporter said: “How funny was Matip when he got booked earlier by the way, proper lost his rag didn’t he hahahaha.”
Fortunately, the yellow card will not have any long-term consequences for Liverpool or Matip. It was just his seventh start of the season as he replaced Ibrahima Konate at the heart of the Reds’ defence, while it represented only his first booking, meaning he is some distance away from a suspension.
That was not the view Craig Pawson had though as he awarded a free-kick to the Bees, while showing Matip a yellow card. The Cameroonian did little to hide his disdain as he fell to his knees and wildly questioned the decision before then launching into a passionate debate with the referee.
