Liverpool step up plans to hijack transfer for Manchester United target


Liverpool are looking to gatecrash Manchester United’s transfer plans and increase their interest in Sporting star Goncalo Inacio.

Liverpool are desperate to bolster their defensive options after losing some of their solidity in the area in the past 12 months.

Virgil van Dijk remains the key man at the back for Jurgen Klopp while they have three other centre-backs in Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate.

However, with Van Dijk and Matip both 32, Klopp is looking to the future and Sporting star Inacio has been looked at.

According to the Mirror, Liverpool sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action when Portugal took on Bosnia.

The Reds’ interest in the central defender will come as a blow to United, who have also earmarked Inacio for a potential transfer.

Erik ten Hag is a fan of the youngster and sees him as an ideal replacement for Harry Maguire, who he was keen to move on in the summer.

As a left-footed centre-back, Inacio was seen as the ideal back-up to Lisandro Martinez, who has shown concerning injury traits in recent months.

The only other left-footed centre-back United have is Jonny Evans, who was a shock arrival in the summer, but is 36 in January.
