Liverpool will announce Richard Hughes as their new sporting director on Wednesday, talkSPORT understands.
Former Scotland international, Hughes, will leave his role as Bournemouth’s technical director to move to Anfield at the end of the season.
Hughes joined Bournemouth’s recruitment team under Eddie Howe after retiring from the game and was promoted as technical director during the club’s stay in the Premier League.
The Cherries announced his departure at the end of the season on March 5.
He’ll be tasked with helping develop the Reds squad without legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, who will leave the club at the end of the season.
Hughes will be helped out by former sporting director Michael Edwards, who will return to the club having been named as CEO of football at Anfield.
One of the first tasks greeting Edwards and Hughes will be finding a successor to Klopp with former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso seen as the first choice for the role.
Liverpool have been without a permanent sporting director since the summer with Edwards’ successor, Julian Ward, leaving after less than a year in the role.
The club brought in German Jord Schmadtke on a temporary basis to help Klopp in the summer transfer window, which saw Liverpool sign Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.
Hughes started his 17-year playing career at Arsenal, although he never played for their senior side.
He joined Bournemouth in 1998, playing for them for four years before moving across the south coast to join Portsmouth.
During his spell at Fratton Park he amassed five appearances for the Scotland national team.
In his nine-year spell at Pompey he made 114 appearances in the Premier League and made a return to the Cherries in 2012 before retiring two years later.
