Liverpool transfer news as Martin Zubimendi ‘changes stance’ amid green light for $63m deal

Liverpool transfer news as Martin Zubimendi may have had a change of heart on his future, while the Reds have reportedly been given the green light to sign a Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement.

The January transfer window is fast approaching, and the question for Liverpool will be whether they stick or twist.

Arne Slot has led his side to a sensational start to the season, with the Reds sitting top of both the Premier League and Champions League standings, while also reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. With just a few weeks left now until 2025 begins, he and sporting director Richard Hughes will have to decide whether they want to try and bolster their squad for what looks set to be a chase for silverware in the New Year.

Injuries to the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas might lead them to look at defensive options, and of course there is the small matter of the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Martin Zubimendi may have changed his stance on his future, and he could now be open to leaving Real Sociedad, according to The Athletic.

Liverpool of course failed in its attempts to bring the midfielder to Anfield during the summer, with Zubimendi choosing to stay put at his boyhood club. He has since batted away suggestions he could make a U-turn on his decision, insisting he is happy with the call he made.

The latest report though suggests he could be on the move next summer. The 25-year-old is thought to have a buyout clause worth $63m (£50m/€60m) in his contract, with no extension having been agreed following his decision to stay.

Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen)

Jeremie Frimpong has ‘given his approval’ for a move to Liverpool, according to Sky Sports Switzerland. The Reds are said to be ‘betting’ on the Bayer Leverkusen star amid ongoing doubts over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future.

It’s claimed that regular contact has been made between Liverpool and Frimpong in recent weeks, with the 23-year-old supposedly giving the green light for a transfer. No formal contact has been made with Leverkusen though, with the German champions said to be looking for around $63m (£50m/€60m).

Liverpool.com says: It’s easy to see why Frimpong might be seen as an ideal candidate to replace Alexander-Arnold, although that’s assuming Liverpool will want the same sort of right-back. If anything, Frimpong might be seen as an even more attacking option than the Reds’ vice-captain, and Slot has clearly done a lot of work on the defensive side of his game this season.

Maybe then a more conventional right-back might be better suited to this Liverpool side. Still, if Frimpong becomes available, it would only be natural for the Reds to be interested.
