Liverpool transfer news as Real Madrid ace ‘contacted’ and interest ‘increases’ in $107m striker

Liverpool transfer news as a Real Madrid defender has supposedly been contacted. Interest in Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres is supposedly increasing too.

Liverpool needs to finalize its plan for who will take over from Jürgen Klopp this summer before any transfer decisions can be 100 per cent taken and committed to. Given the positive state of the Reds’ squad, wholesale changes are not required regardless.

But it makes sense to continually improve the team and mix things up. Standing still is simply not an option and Michael Edwards, now in place as FSG’s CEO of football, and Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s new sporting director, will know that.

More important than transfers is probably signing some key men up to extended deals with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all out of contract in 2025. But a sprinkling of extra quality in the team would not go amiss either.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today, including links with a Real Madrid defender who could be on the way out. There is also a claim about a Sporting CP forward who has gone goal crazy this season, though it remains to be seen whether Liverpool identifies signing another number nine as a priority.

Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid)

Liverpool is among a number of clubs considering a move for Real Madrid full-back Ferland Mendy this summer, according to L’Equipe. The 28-year-old Frenchman will only have 12 months left on his deal at the end of the season and there are a few Premier League sides said to be eyeing up a potential bargain with that being the case.

As well as Liverpool, Arsenal has supposedly contacted the player about a potential move, though no formal talks have been held. The Reds are said to be reluctant to commit until they have a new manager signed up. Newcastle United and both Manchester clubs have also registered an interest.

Mendy is a good player and would come with a lot of experience but he is slightly older than Liverpool would normally target. It would be a surprise to see this one get done.

Viktor Gyökeres (Sporting CP)

Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres is of ‘increasing’ interest to Liverpool ahead of the summer, according to HITC. Rúben Amorim’s men won 3-0 against fifth-placed Vitória de Guimarães over the weekend and some Reds scouts were supposedly there to keep an eye on him.

According to the report, holding midfielder Morten Hjulmand and left-footed center-back Gonçalo Inácio were also looked at by Liverpool while they were there. Those two positions would seem more likely to be targeted than another forward unless there is an exit of one of the existing options. Gyökeres has a release clause worth $107m (£86m/€100m) in his contract.

Will the speculation linking Liverpool with moves for Sporting players die down a little after the suggestion (via The Athletic) that Amorim may not be the leading contender for the top job at Anfield? We will soon find out.
