Liverpool transfer truth should be clear to Jürgen Klopp successor amid latest Jamal Musiala claim

Liverpool has been linked with another player from Bayern Munich, but it could be too late to sign him after the performances of Jürgen Klopp’s side this season.

Liverpool has every reason to be happy with the business that the recruitment team conducted last summer. Jürgen Klopp needed a new midfield and while things have not been 100 per cent smooth for all of the additions, the revamped engine room has largely worked.

Now nearing the end of the season, there is little question about the brilliance of Alexis Mac Allister. Dominik Szoboszlai has since tailed off but at one stage, he was looking like a real player, while Wataru Endō has also provided value for his modest price in games where Liverpool is looking to play more defensively. Ryan Gravenberch’s moments have been more sporadic but there is much more to come from the 21-year-old Dutch talent.

Of course, Jude Bellingham’s start to life in Real Madrid could leave some wondering ‘what if?’, but the disappointment of missing out on what now looks to be a sure generational player has been eased by Liverpool’s performances in the current campaign. That could also make it difficult in terms of future signings in advanced areas, however.

Bellingham’s exit from the Bundesliga saw him pass the torch to one of his former England youth international teammates — Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala. Just as the spotlight was on Erling Haaland before it was on Bellingham, Musiala now looks to be the next star of German football, with teams across Europe already watching him.

Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester City were all reported to be interested in the 20-year-old, according to Sport1, after an impressive start to the season saw him contribute to seven goals in nine matches across all competitions. Musiala was also the hero last season, scoring the goal that deprived Klopp’s former side of their first league title since 2012 — the year in which the Liverpool manager won the domestic double for Dortmund.

Now, according to The Independent, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona and PSG are also keen on a summer deal for a player who could well be on the move. Bayern doesn’t want to lose Musiala, but a sale has not been completely ruled out.

The truth is, though, that Liverpool should be looking to splash that money elsewhere. Szoboszlai is of a similar age, having turned 23 in October, and he has already taken on a talismanic role in the Reds’ midfield. And any move for Musiala would also hamper the development of some of Liverpool’s academy graduates.

Harvey Elliott is enjoying one of his best seasons yet under Klopp, while Curtis Jones could also see less game time if the system is adjusted to fit in one of the world’s best attacking-midfield prospects.

Ryan Gravenberch has also made a strong start to his career on Merseyside, and a much better one than some in Munich might have expected. Effectively, Liverpool’s work in the transfer market this summer has made it difficult for a move for Musiala to make sense if he is not considered a future successor on the left flank.

Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota are both 26 years old, and neither are players who would be close to being considered as options that need replacing. In similarity to the acquisitions of Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah, both were signed at stages in their careers when they were on the cusp of ‘world-class’ status. Given that Musiala’s best displays have come from central areas, a deal for him would only cause imbalance within a squad that has been crafted with precision.

That means that Liverpool would be better off continuing their investment into the squad in other areas of the team. Much of that will revolve around what system the new manager wants to play, but adding another attacking midfielder to a squad already packed with talent and depth in that area does not appear to be a major priority.
