New plans have been unveiled for the future of Liverpool FC’s historic Melwood ground. Earlier this year, it was confirmed how the club agreed to reclaim their West Derby stadium after relegation in 2020.
It became the training ground for the Reds’ women’s team after plans were made to build 170 new homes . wrong. New plans have been submitted to Liverpool Council to merge the academy with the existing Robbie Fowler Academy.
Housing group Torus confirmed in June that it would no longer pursue proposals to build hundreds of new properties on the site vacated by LFC after it bought back the heritage site three years after the club’s departure.
This was done to provide an elite training base for the women’s team and a center of excellence for the development of the Pro Girls Academy.They previously trained at Tranmere Rovers’ ‘campus’ facilities in Leesow Road, Wallasey. The team will share the site with the Robbie Fowler Academy, a sports-based training school, which will continue to operate as part of the Torus Annex.
As a result, new planning conditions have been submitted to Liverpool City Council for the installation of floodlights in three outside areas, mobile booths to be used as welfare facilities for the Academy and the LFC Foundation and new signage.

That opportunity arose at the start of 2023 when the Toros agreed to sell Melwood back to the club. “The club took over Melwood in June 2023 and has since undergone extensive refurbishment of the stadium, particularly the three pitches and buildings, to facilitate the re-opening of LFCW’s elite training centre.
“The LFC Foundation works with Fowler Academy to provide community programs in Melwood. The college aims to enroll up to 250 students from the Liverpool city area on the course. It has not yet been decided when the council’s planning department will review the plans.
