Liverpool’s forgotten man joined the Championship club as a free agent four months later.

 

The former Liverpool player has signed a short-term deal with the struggling Championship club.

Former Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala has signed a short-term deal with Championship side Rotherham United after leaving Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season. The South Yorkshire outfit have been given permission to sign the former Reds defender, who is a free agent for four months following Andre Green’s season-ending injury.

Ayala joined Liverpool’s academy in 2007 and signed his first professional contract with Liverpool, making his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in August 2009.

He started his youth career at Sevilla but was signed by the Reds after the time spent there. he refused to play. He signed a professional contract with a La Liga club. However, he failed to impress at Anfield and made just 11 appearances before joining Norwich City in 2011.

He signed for Middlesbrough in 2014 and enjoyed success at the Riverside Stadium, helping them win promotion at the championship in 2016. He made 216 appearances for Boro before joining Blackburn Rovers in 2020 but was released by Ewood Park after three years and spent the entire summer without a club before moving to Rotherham and losing his free agent.

Regarding the transfer, Ayala said: “It was hard because I was without a team for about four months and I couldn’t train by myself. I’m happy to be here.

I wanted to stay in the Championship and I’m very happy that Rotherham are here this time. I hope I can play in the championship for another year. “The first day was very good. There have been a few players I’ve played with or against over the years.

Last season we lost 4-0 to Blackburn when we played Rotherham. I knew they were an honest group of lads who wanted to fight for the shirt and would do everything possible to get the three points. “I’m looking forward to getting started because I always give 100% to the team I play for.”
