Los Angeles Lakers Sign Center Kylor Kelley

In a strategic move to enhance their defensive capabilities, the Los Angeles Lakers have announced the signing of 7-foot center Kylor Kelley. The 27-year-old giant brings a wealth of experience from his time in the NBA, G League, and international competitions, making him an intriguing addition to the Lakers’ roster.

Kelley’s NBA experience may be limited to 11 games last season with the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks, but he made a lasting impression. In his first career start with the Mavericks on February 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kelley showcased his all-around skills with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, accompanied by one assist and one block. Despite averaging just 11.5 minutes per game, Kelley managed to average 3.1 points and 3.5 rebounds, demonstrating his potential to contribute in a more significant role.

However, it’s Kelley’s impressive tenure in the G League that truly highlights his abilities. Across four seasons and 108 games with the South Bay Lakers, Maine Celtics, Raptors 905, and Austin Spurs, Kelley has averaged 8.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 2.0 blocks in 20.1 minutes. His most recent season with the South Bay Lakers was particularly notable, as he started 27 of 32 games and averaged 11.5 points on a career-high 68.2 percent shooting from the field, 7.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.4 blocks in 26.7 minutes. Kelley’s defensive prowess earned him a spot on the 2024 NBA G League All-Defensive Team after leading the league in blocks per game.

Kelley’s basketball journey began at Oregon State University, where he played two seasons and established himself as a formidable defensive presence. In his senior season, Kelley started all 31 games and averaged 11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in 29.1 minutes, finishing first in the Pac-12 and second nationally in blocks per game. His consistent defensive performance earned him his second consecutive Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection.

In addition to his NBA and G League experience, Kelley has competed internationally in Canada, Denmark, and England, further expanding his skill set and adaptability. With his signing, the Lakers aim to fortify their frontcourt and provide additional defensive options. Kelley’s ability to protect the rim and contribute on the glass could prove valuable in the team’s pursuit of success.

The Lakers’ front office has shown a keen eye for talent in the G League and beyond, and Kelley’s signing is a testament to their commitment to building a well-rounded roster. As the team heads into the new season, Kelley will look to make an immediate impact and carve out a role for himself in the Lakers’ rotation. With his unique blend of size, skill, and defensive expertise, Kylor Kelley is poised to become a key contributor to the Los Angeles Lakers’ success.
