Mohamed Salah followed up Martin Dubravka’s penalty from 12 yards after bringing down Slovakia’s Diogo Jota in the first half.

The Portuguese went past the goalkeeper and fell to the ground after a touch, with a VAR review upholding the decision to award a penalty.

But there was a wider debate in the crowd, with Premier League legends Alan Shearer and Ian Wright criticizing the forward for not scoring in an open goal and accusing him of diving.

After the final whistle, Howe claimed referee Anthony Taylor made a poor decision and said his side should have been awarded a penalty minutes earlier. “There are two ways to look at it,” he told reporters.

“The penalty against Sean Longstaff was a penalty for me and it changed the game. “Then Liverpool went the other way in attack and for me it wasn’t a penalty.

It’s a very difficult moment for us.”He continued: “I don’t think it’s necessary to be open. I don’t think being charged twice will help much. Both fines are huge. “There were two penalties, one of which I didn’t expect, and the other was very weak.

Of course, there were times when we didn’t defend well. There was a lot of long range shooting tonight as well.”Apart from the penalty, the goals conceded are disappointing. We know right now that we can do better.“I have a lot of questions tonight.

Their movement and quality and we often showed good defensive play. But at that point we stopped and were disappointed.”Despite the penalty controversy, Howe praised Liverpool’s performance against Newcastle despite being unhappy with his side’s defensive performance.

“I thought Liverpool played really well,” he said. “They were very difficult for us and we did well to draw 0-0. I sat there until the game was over.”They are a team that tests you in every way, especially here.

You know you will feel pressured and miss out on opportunities. You have to think about those moments. “When we got good enough to play against their press, we gave them problems. We had some really good moments.

“We scored two goals at home in probably one of the toughest places in the Premier League. We could have done it before the game but we had to defend better to win the game,” he said.
