Reports on Saturday night suggested Diaz’s parents had been kidnapped and his mother has since been confirmed safe.

Following the confirmation of Diaz’s absence from the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “We had to obviously make a late change because of the private situation involving Luis Diaz. It’s a worrying situation for all of us and it was a pretty tough night.

“I have never had that before. It’s a new experience I never needed.”

Outlets in Colombia have reported his parents were kidnapped near their home in the town of Barrancas in Colombia’s Caribbean region.

There have been conflicting stories regarding whether his father has been rescued, but Colombian president Gustavo Petro confirmed his mother had been returned to safety.

The full statement released by Liverpool on Sunday morning read: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm it is aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia.

“It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority.”
