The teenage sensation was seeking to win for a third week in a row as darts’ finest headed to Birmingham, only to miss out against Michael van Gerwen. Throughout the course of the night Littler beat Rob Cross and Luke Humphries – all whilst Liverpool were in action.

The Reds were hammered at Anfield by Atalanta, who took control of their Europa League quarter-final tie. The Italians scored three without reply on Merseyside and Littler, a big Manchester United fan, reposted the result to his Instagram story with the words: “Oh dear!”

Jurgen Klopp’s side now face a mammoth task in overturning the three-goal deficit with the German’s hopes of landing a treble hanging by a thread. He said after their loss: “Yeah unfortunately there is nothing really positive to say about the game. The start was good. Darwin Nunez had a good moment but from that moment on it became a really bad game and there is nothing positive to say.

“I didn’t like our tactical positioning in possession. We gave them one situation by passing the ball there, then everyone was chasing another guy. We scored one that was offside but it was a bad game from us. Atalanta had a good game, scored three goals and deserved to win.”

Littler meanwhile was unable to further cement himself as the standout player in this year’s Premier League. He remains top of the eight-man table having won 15 matches, leaving him on 26 points. Humphries is on 24 points with Van Gerwen now on 22 points after winning his fourth night of the competition.

The teenager will get the chance to land another Premier League win when the tournament resumes with Night 12 in Rotterdam on April 18. He will take on former world champion Michael Smith in the opening match of the night.

Van Gerwen said after his win in Birmingham: “It’s about time. I have made it hard for myself to be fair. But more importantly it is about how you bounce back. I know the last few weeks have not been great for me, but to come back with a win tonight feels good for me.”

The Dutchman added: “I had to go really deep tonight and at the end Luke and I neither really played our A-game, but when you win nights like this, it is not always about who is playing well – sometimes it is who can handle it.
