Man Utd legend interviewed for Liverpool job before Kenny Dalglish completed return

 

Kenny Dalglish returned to Liverpool in 2011 but Reds fans may have to replace him with a Manchester United icon in the Anfield dugout.

Mark Hughes has been interviewed to become Liverpool manager ahead of the return of club icon Kenny Dalglish.

The former Scotland striker took over at Anfield in January 2011 after Roy Hodgson was sacked following poor performances. Dalglish, who won three league titles in his first job, returned to the Anfield dugout initially on a temporary basis.

He did enough to secure his place for once, winning the League Cup that season. Dalglish won the League Cup for the second time in 74 games in charge in 2012.

Speaking on Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Hughes said: “I once interviewed for a job in Liverpool. I think it’s not well documented, but it doesn’t really matter because I don’t understand it.

Yes? . “I think Kenny [Dalglish] has decided he wants to be a manager again. Maybe the candidate selection was poor and we didn’t get close.

Although the second game at Liverpool was not as successful as the first, Dalglish said he had no regrets after beating Hughes. “I was honored to be asked to come back,” he said before being fired in the summer of 2013.

“It’s a shame that Roy lost his job, but I see no reason for him to change his mind now.”Dalglish has not held another management role since then, but returned to Anfield as a non-executive director in October 2013.

Hughes currently holds several posts until 2023. He spent less than a year at QPR before being appointed manager of Stoke. The 60-year-old spent five years at the Potters before being sacked in January 2018.

Hughes spent less than a year at Southampton before taking up the role at Bradford in February 2022. It ended earlier this year when the Bantams led the club to the play-offs last season and finished 18th in the League A two.

He was replaced by Graham Alexander, who took the club to 14th place in the league.
