Manchester United managers have been told to reconsider their options if they decide to part ways with Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United have been advised they should look for Xabi Alonso if they sack Erik ten Hag. Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman is surprised by interest in Graham Potter and believes Alonso would be better at Old Trafford.
Potter is believed to be United’s main target if the Ten Hag loses his job. Visiting investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to be a fan of the former Brighton and Chelsea manager.
Potter has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in April. He has only been at Stamford Bridge for seven months and has lost more than a third of his games.
McManaman does not believe Potter has been treated fairly by the Chelsea board. But he doesn’t understand why United see him as the perfect candidate to solve their problems.
McManaman told Betfred: “I’m not sure if he will have the same fate as Chelsea but after what happened at Chelsea I would be surprised if Manchester United lose Eric Ten Haag and replace him with Graham Potter.
“I have a lot of sympathy for Graham because I think he was treated very badly during his time at Stamford Bridge, but I would be surprised if Manchester United appointed him after everything that happened at Chelsea because bad things are happening again.
This leaves many questions.why did they take a chance on him after such a miserable spell at chelsea. “I’m not saying it’s Graham Potter’s fault, because that’s far from the truth, but I don’t see why he has to go there.”
Instead, McManaman believes Alonso would be the perfect fit for United. The Spaniard, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, took charge of Bayer Leverkusen from October 2022 and has guided the German side to the top of the Bundesliga this season.
