West Ham Women’s Season Draw Matt Bird, Hobinger and LFCMatt Bird lamented the missed opportunities but Liverpool FC Women’s overall performance was encouraging after a 95th-minute equalizer denied West Ham United Women a win.
After leading for most of Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League game and hitting the post twice, Marie Hobinger’s low finish put the Reds ahead. A third win in four WSL matches looked likely, but Rico Ueki converted a free kick in extra time to make it 1-1.
It means Beard’s men have taken seven points from their opening four league games and the season now heads into the international break. His assessment of Liverpool’s performance…I think we played really well and I think we dominated a lot of the game today. Obviously we hit the woodwork a few times and Mackenzie [Arnold] made some great saves from Fuka [Nagano]. I think it goes to show that you should try to change if you get the chance. West Ham have always had good results. Of course, it’s very unfortunate that we conceded a goal in the 95th minute. But thanks to West Ham, they kept going and [Mel] played a great ball in the Phillies end. Overall, we did really well and we could have had two or three games on other days, but we didn’t.Here are the key factors that have allowed the Reds to maintain their dominance for so long:
I think they were pretty tight defensively and that allowed us to play with that. Looking at the movement change, I think we could have had better moves and maybe made a few more penetrations. However, due to its compact form, it is difficult to play and must be avoided. When he’s around, he tries to find ways to get into different positions and I thought we did a good job in the first half. In the second half, the shape changed and the game was a little different, but I still thought we did well. About Hobinger and how he established himself in the club…Yes, Marie is a fantastic player who uses both feet. Technically, he has great attacking skills. We saw it against Aston Villa and we saw it again today. On his overall thoughts on the team’s start to the season…The first two games were very good for us to take six points.
We were disappointed last week and we wanted to put things right today and we felt we could do it. It’s hard to score points on the road in the WSL. A score of 7 is a good reflection. Personally I think they should get a point, but it’s a good result for the first four games.
