Maximo Adams commits to UNC basketball. What it means for Hubert Davis, Tar Heels

Maximo Adams is UNC basketball’s first commitment in the 2026 recruiting class.

Adams announced his decision on Nov. 14, becoming the first player in Hubert Davis’ latest recruiting class. A top-25 wing according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, the 6-foot-7, 250-pound California native chose the Tar Heels over Michigan State, Texas and Kentucky. Following a knee injury as a sophomore, Adams continued his career at Sierra Canyon and helped the program win a state championship. On the Nike EYBL circuit, Adams averaged 20.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, knocking down 52% of his shots, including 42% from 3-point range.

Here’s a breakdown of Adams’ game and what it means for the Tar Heels in the 2026-27 season.

Maximo Adams scouting report as UNC basketball recruit

A high-level rebounder and finisher at the rim, Adams is a versatile weapon capable of playing multiple positions for the Tar Heels on the wing or in the post. With three-and-D potential and the ability to operate out of pick-and-roll situations, Adams has the look of a player who should fit perfectly into how Hubert Davis likes to build his teams. His mid-range jumper and footwork are among his best traits.

After missing out on Anthony Thompson (Ohio State) and Bryson Howard (Duke), the Tar Heels got on the board with Maximo Adams. Combo guards Dylan Mingo, who is on an official visit at UNC during the weekend of Nov. 14, could be next on the list for UNC. A top-five recruit nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Mingo has previously visited N.C. State, Baylor, Alabama, UConn and Miami.

Of the players on UNC’s 2025-26 roster, only senior guard Seth Trimble is a lock to not be with the Tar Heels next season. Freshman forward Caleb Wilson is likely to join that list as a player projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Outside of those two players, UNC is positioned to return the rest of the players that are expected to be key contributors for this year’s team. That group includes Arizona transfer Henri Veesaar (redshirt junior), Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans (junior), Alabama transfer Jarin Stevenson (junior), West Virginia transfer Jonathan Powell (sophomore), Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young (junior) and international prospect Luka Bogavac (junior).

The best options could be the players you’re able to retain. If the group works out this season, UNC might not need to add much via the 2026 recruiting class. That would allow the Tar Heels to fill in the gaps through the transfer portal.
