Michael Malone Linked to Potential Replacement Role After Sudden UNC Coaching Turnover

Oh, this could be something, alright…

With reports surfacing that Kim English will not have a role on Michael Malone’s inaugural UNC staff, attention has quickly shifted to another intriguing candidate as the coaching search begins to take shape.

That candidate is Bryan Tibaldi, a former top assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers who has built an extensive NBA résumé over the past several seasons. Tibaldi has worked under both Kenny Atkinson and J.B. Bickerstaff during his time in Cleveland, gaining valuable experience in game planning, defensive strategy, and player development at the highest level of the sport.

Across those six seasons, Tibaldi has developed a reputation as a detail-driven assistant with a strong emphasis on scouting and in-game adjustments. His background in modern NBA systems—particularly in defensive versatility and matchup preparation—has made him a respected voice within coaching circles

Adding another layer to his profile is his previous working relationship with English, which gives him familiarity within the broader coaching network tied to Malone’s staff construction. While English is no longer expected to be part o hif the group, those existing connections have helped keep Tibaldi’s name in the conversation.

As Malone continues to assemble his first staff in Chapel Hill, the focus appears to be on blending NBA experience with coaches capable of translating that knowledge into the college game—making Tibaldi a name worth watching closely.

Bryan Tibaldi is 41 years old and brings a deep and varied coaching résumé that stretches across both the NBA and college ranks. Over the years, he has held multiple roles within the Cleveland Cavaliers organization, including a stint as head coach of their G League affiliate, the Canton Charge, where he gained valuable experience managing player development and system implementation at the professional level.

Before his NBA rise, Tibaldi played college basketball at Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball under legendary coach Tom Izzo from 2005 to 2007. After his playing career ended, he transitioned immediately into coaching, serving as a graduate assistant at Michigan State for two additional seasons, where he began building his foundation in scouting, film breakdown, and player development.

His coaching path eventually led him through several important developmental stops, including time as a video coordinator during his stint with Missouri Tigers men’s basketball under Kim English. That experience helped expand his understanding of game preparation and strategic planning at the college level, complementing his later NBA responsibilities.

Across his career, Tibaldi has developed a reputation as a detail-oriented assistant with a strong defensive mindset and a track record of working effectively in both developmental and high-pressure environments.

Overall, Michael Malone appears to be targeting an up-and-coming assistant coach with experience across both the NBA and college levels as he begins assembling his first staff at North Carolina Tar Heels.

The appeal is clear: coaches with résumés that include organizations like the Cleveland Cavaliers and programs such as Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball and Missouri Tigers men’s basketball bring a blend of NBA-level detail and proven college development experience. That mix is often viewed as valuable in today’s game, where roster construction, analytics, and player development overlap heavily between both levels. There’s also a strategic element to this type of hire. Lesser-known, rising assistants—especially those with strong developmental backgrounds—tend to bring continuity and stability. They’re often more likely to stay long-term compared to higher-profile names who may quickly jump to head coaching opportunities elsewhere.

Still, the urgency is real. Malone will need to finalize his staff soon in order to begin roster planning, recruiting coordination, and offseason development work. The earlier the structure is in place, the more effectively UNC can transition into a new era and set expectations for Year 1 under the new regime.

The single-most important thing Malone has to establish in year one at North Carolina is consistency. While play may fluctuate, it is all about making sure the messages from the coaching staff remain on point, and that there are no slight deviations in what needs to come across. Malone does take over a traditional power, but one that did not get out of the first round of the tournament back in March…

Fans, and maybe even players, may not be patient with the state of UNC basketball, but they are going to have to be. As the pieces slowly but surely come together, Malone needs people on his bench he can lean on. He thought English could be an answer to that, but it was not meant to be. If it ends up being Tibaldi, then it shows what Malone is really going to be about leading these Tar Heels.

What you have to remember is both Atkinson and Bickerstaff are basketball coaches keen on player development. They have had respectable careers in the NBA as head coaches and top assistants because they prioritize this. Malone may need to up his ante in terms of recruitment, but this seems like a plausible pathway forward for UNC hoops. Either way, this is a plan that could work for them.
