There isn’t a whole lot that is surprising in college basketball these days, especially with how much the game has changed. But on Wednesday morning, it would be hard not to say that North Carolina fans were surprised.
Early on Wednesday morning, former UNC guard Seth Trimble announced he was committing to Louisville to potentially continue his college career. Trimble spent four seasons at UNC but entered the transfer portal in the Spring. With a new ruling from the Colorado District Court on the 2022 class, it has now opened the door for one more year.
Trimble’s decision is an interesting one as he signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Washington and participated in the NBA Summer League. But also, why Louisville? Well, North Carolina just didn’t have the room due to the timing of the ruling as Michael Malone said in a statement:
“Seth gave Carolina four years of tremendous effort, toughness and leadership and he has earned the respect and affection of Tar Heels everywhere,” Malone’s statement read. “I have tremendous empathy for Seth because the timing of the court decision put him and our program in a difficult position as we constructed our roster. None of that changes how we feel about Seth. He has represented Carolina the right way, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to get to know him and his family. Even though he will be playing elsewhere for one year, he will always be a Tar Heel.”
Trimble also showed love to UNC in his commitment message, so there shouldn’t be any hard feelings.
Now, we just have to wait and see if Trimble will indeed be eligible to play in that fifth year or if he will have to go another route to keep his basketball career going. If Trimble does play at Louisville, UNC will see him twice in the regular season.
