Darwin Nunez is going through a tough time and will face another challenge at Liverpool.
The Liverpool forward failed to get an assist in Sunday’s home win against Manchester United after a poor performance in front of goal led to a goalless draw.
Michael Owen has told Premier League Productions that he is still “really shocked” by how frustrated he is with Darwin Nunes’ raw form and lack of foundation.
But the former England striker admitted the 24-year-old could be “quiet”. Perhaps that is why opinions are divided. Because even if the player doesn’t know what he’s doing half the time, you’re still going to have to pay a lot of money to see him in action.
It is Liverpool’s club record transfer and only his second season in England, but fans are now eager to see him take the next step. But with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to clinch the Premier League title and losing top spot following results at the weekend, Michael Owen has shared his thoughts on Darwin Nunes.
Attributes of Darwin Nunes
“That hasn’t changed and that’s who he is as a player,” Owen said of Nunes’ unconventional style. “I’m really nervous to say what I’m saying about him now because it’s something I’ve said so many times, there are so many fundamentals to his game that need to be improved.
In fact, it performs many difficult tasks well. Some of his works are amazing. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll think, “Wow.”
“I was amazed at how primitive this child was. He gives players his age a run for their money and the rest are still raw. “But he has the qualities to improve. With a good coach, it could be good for him. If you don’t respect his game, he can make you look ridiculous.
“Nunes started and was substituted for Manchester United on Sunday. But that doesn’t mean he won’t play against West Ham United tonight. This is League Cup action for the Reds and Klopp usually substitutes players in this competition. And since Nunes needs some form, he should better start another scheme.
But if it were up to club legend Phil Thompson, he’d take Nunes out and start Cody Gakpo tonight.
