The NBA discourse machine went into overdrive after a former Lakers champion, Byron Scott, delivered a blunt message about the franchise’s biggest star, LeBron James. During a radio appearance, Scott didn’t just question Bron’s fit; he suggested it was time for a breakup between him and Los Angeles. Within minutes, fan pages, analysts, and rival supporters were firing back, many calling the comments disrespectful and unnecessary.
NBA Fans Slam Byron Scott’s Comments on LeBron’s Lakers Future
Appearing on Power 106’s “Brown Bag Mornings,” Scott didn’t hold back when discussing James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers.
“I just thought it was laughable coming from one of the greatest players to ever play the game to say it’s harder to play now than it was then. I’m a fan, but I don’t mince words either. I think this should be his last year here. You don’t got to go home but you got the h*ll up out of here,” Scott said, referencing a popular movie quote while clarifying he meant Los Angeles, not the NBA entirely.
The reactions were immediate.
A prominent James fan account and an NBA parody account blasted the take, writing, “The disrespect is insane man, the hate watch is gonna be generational when we dip.” Fox Sports Radio co-host Cuffs The Legend called the situation “NASTY,” adding that Lakers legends have been ungrateful toward James from the beginning.
“Byron Scott been a hater but this is NASTY Laker legends are ungrateful so of course Laker fans are gonna be ungrateful too.. they never wanted Akron on the Lakers from the start lol.”
Musician, influencer, and Clippers enthusiast Jamal Christopher pointed out parts of the fanbase being “so Kobe pilled out.” “It’s parts of that fanbase that be so kobe pilled out.” And then, yet another James fan account argued that joining the Lakers was “the single biggest mistake” of his career, claiming the franchise was never grateful for the 2020 championship run. “Just look at this, man. We know Byron is a Bron hater, but this just proves more than ever: The single biggest mistake of LeBron’s career was reviving the rotting corpse that was the Los Angeles Lakers. They were never grateful.”
Is Scott Right About a Luka Dončić-Led Reset?
Scott’s comments weren’t made in a vacuum. The Lakers are entering a pivotal offseason, with James potentially hitting free agency. The franchise is also publicly prioritizing flexibility around Luka Dončić following last year’s blockbuster trade.
Reports have suggested the Lakers want to reshape the roster with younger, defensive-minded shooters who better complement Dončić’s ball-dominant style. That raises uncomfortable questions about fit, timeline, and money, especially with James still commanding superstar-level salary figures at 41.
Scott has previously criticized both James and Dončić for defensive lapses, but his larger point appears rooted in timeline alignment. In his view, the franchise should fully pivot to Luka. But it is easier said than done. The numbers complicate the narrative. While the Lakers have been inconsistent, James remains productive, and cap limitations mean even contenders would require him to take a significant pay cut.
That’s where emotion meets reality. From a pure basketball perspective, building around a 27-year-old superstar makes sense. From a legacy standpoint, pushing out the player who delivered banner No. 17 is far messier.
The Lakers’ summer will probably define the next era in Los Angeles. Whether that includes James or not remains unclear.
